April 27 Back by popular demandWell, it's been 2 months since I last blogged here. I was under the impression no one really read this stuff, and I wasting my time....I was wrong. I have at least one reader - my cousin Amanda. So, HELLO AMANDA and anyone else who cares enough to pop in here.
The kids are so "energetic" - thank God they still don't drink sodas! Hubby and I recently introduced them to the happy meal. T can eat her whole cheeseburger and J's leftovers. They love chicken nuggets and those terribly unhealthy fries. I would feel guilty, but that's really the only "junk food" they eat. They don't eat candy, cookies, or cakes, so I feel one cheesburger and small fry a week won't kill them.
We're slowly attempting potty-training; really, I'm focusing on J since he seems ready, and should be the harder kid to teach. T sits on the potty some, but she's still not totally ready (or maybe she is and I'm too overwhelmed to notice).
J has all 20 of his teeth now; T has 17 teeth(maybe more by now). J seems to favor his left hand for throwing balls, but he uses both to color; T switches hands too, but I think one of them may be a lefty.
They are using the following words to help mommy not lose her mind: "sorry", "please", yes/no", "love you", and the occasional "thank you." They pick up and say tons of new words...everyday they say something...like naming an animal, and I'm totally shocked! My mom must be teaching them a lot while I'm working.
I guess that's all for now...please leave a comment if you like.
And keep an eye out for a new album of photos soon.
February 18 He could be dead...who needs hot wheels?Wow, I had a scary incident take place this afternoon. My hubby and I both fell asleep for a nap; the volume was down on the tv so I could hear the kids. I woke up 1 hour later and realized I didn't hear the kids...they hadn't made a peep. I bust in their room, and they had gotten into the closet; their closet is a catch-all for "no-no's". My hubby and I used to collect Hot Wheels and other 1/64 scale die-cast cars; we left them all in un-opened packages in a blue plastic tub in the closet of the nursery.
Of course the kids had got into the crayons, markers, stencils, coloring pages, cereal, and our damn hot wheels! As I got closer to the closet I noticed some of the hot wheels were pulled out and the babies were in the tub with the remainder of hot wheels. I jerked the kids out and got onto them for getting into the closet(which does have a lock)...and then I realized J (who is deathly allergic to peanuts) had been sitting, bare thigh on a jar of peanut butter!
All I could do was cry and hug him and thank God the jar was unopened - seal intact! It was too close for me to handle; f*** the hot wheels - he could've died. If that jar had been previously opened, or if he had opened it himself he would've had an anaphylactic reaction and died in that closet while I was asleep in the next room.
Don't take kids for granted - they are always a blessing (even when they eat your collectibles). February 15 General Update:Here are some things that have happened with the twins lately:
December 17 Little ThingsBelow is a picture of J by his nursery door; on that door you will notice a 5 foot strip of missing paint & wood...I think T did it. We switched their door with ours until we can afford to replace it.
J now has enough hair for a small ponytail. It is interesting how T's hair grows long all over while J's hair grows longest in the back. Photo below of J's small ponytail.
J is currently cutting his 17th tooth; I can't get in T's mouth to check her out.
Last night I popped J on the bare butt because he had taken his diaper off AGAIN. I laid him down and he hugged me while crying from the spanking. I told him I was sorry I had to spank him, but he shouldn't take his diaper off. Then I said, "You don't take your diaper off," and he said (in a sweet, heart-breaking voice) "Sorry." He got big hugs for that; then today after he bit T and I put him in time-out, he told T "Sorry."
Everyone seems to say you should let kids fall asleep on their own; so that means sometimes they crash in odd spots. T fell asleep on her wooden bed frame today for nap. I know I could have moved her, but she wakes up angry...so I left her. She seemed comfortable though; she even slept for 2 hours. 2 photos below. December 16 100 words saidJ officially reached 100 documented words said yesterday; not just said...says - he knows all of them very well. It all began with "Cat"; he crossed the 100th word mark with "Pocket". Now his "words" list below begins with 101. I have meant to mention his new language trick...short sentences. He had said "purple ball" and "right back" for months; when I got back in town last week, I found out he asked "where's mama?" to my hubby. He was saying "fan off", "tv off" too; but then, on 12-10 he said "Turn TV off." That's a sentence...only missing an adjective, that's a darn sentence - I see that verb!
T's language has been picking up as well; she is almost to 80 words, but she is so much more vocal (she speaks in her own language). T also keeps time with songs well; for examle, she dances at the opening song of Muppets Take Mahattan (their new favorite movie) and sings the words she knows at the perfect times. We thought J was the more musical child when he was younger, but T seems more responsive to music now. Twins always change.
I've got to go clean something...I'll leave you with my hubby's elf shoes - enjoy! Describe: ToddlerBelow you will find a photo of a 19 month old specimen (J) with "toddler" characteristics pointed out(click to enlarge)... December 11 I forgot about the dresser thing...I think I forgot to post about J's nap on the dresser 12-3-05. You see, there for a week or two J could climb onto the dresser, but he couldn't get back off. Due to T's obsession with staying up late, she is always in need of a nap; the only way she could get a nap last weekend was to wait till J got stuck on the dresser. It worked, and I let him stay up there; after a while he fell asleep spanning the corners of both dressers....his butt in a puddle of pee, and his face in a puddle of drool...the tv was to his back on a snowy channel.
I did get him down, but only after snapping a few pics of the sleepy boy. And he immediately woke his sister up. In case you were wondering how we can let a kid play with a dvd player....my hubby put shipping tape over the tray so it couldn't be ejected.
Photos of dresser boy are below: Christmas DinnerToday we had my hubby's cousin and aunt over for Xmas dinner; I know it seems early, but this was our only opportunity to see his cousin this year. We had a great time talking and watching LOST. Our friend Jeff came over too, because we consider him a part of the family(he even has a stocking hanging up).
All went well - my mother-in-law cooked up a huge feast and dessert...yummy pumpkin pie and cherry pie! The twins made sure to vocally interfere with the "saying of grace" - mainly T(she's my little rebel girl
I am very thankful that we got to see some of our family, but I do wish we could ALL get together sometime. My hubby's other cousin will be in town in a week or two, and hopefully we will see him and his son then. His uncle will be dealing with prostate surgery this month, so we probably won't get to see him and his wife until next year.
I am attaching a picture for "Uncle Jeff" that was taken 12-3-05 of him and J playing wth a car...hey Jeff, come over for a photo shoot sometime soon - we can dress you like santa & take pictures with the twins.
I'm back from my trip - I knew they would be different kidsI have returned from a 2.5 day business trip, and my children are different. Actually, the idea that they look and act differdent is wearing off, as my infuence since I got home has been changing them back to the T & J I knew Tuesday morning.
While I was gone J asked his Papa, "Wheres mama?" Since I've been home I have hard him say many two word phrases: "fan off", "tv off", "wheres bottle?". My mom told me T is saying "flower" now.
December 03 Some of the good/cute things the kids doThis stuff is easier to break down into bullets with paragraphs:
November 29 ThanksgivingThe holidays are normally a very stressful time due to the seemingly millions of places we have to go to stuff our faces and see our family. My husband traditionally despises the holiday season, but this year he has been faking happy - BABE, IF YOU READ THIS, THANK YOU FOR MAKING THANKSGIVING WORK .
For Thanksgiving we went to my parents house to see them, my brother, (who we see all week too) and my Aunt Sh. We ate cold-cut sandwiches - I LOVE a break in tradition. We had a great time just chatting and eating.
Next we drove an hour to my hubby's step-sister's house for dinner with his dad and step-mom and everyone else that comes with that side of the family. We had a good time; the kids had a blast with their cousins (S, C, L, and a new cousin is due April 22, 2006). Not much happened that was unpleasant other than the terror I felt from my son running around a kitchen that had in it a dead bird fried in PEANUT oil. I'll admit I was a spaz, but for good reason; you can never tell where someone might touch with peanut oil on their fingers...oven knob, chair, garbage can, faucet, toilet flush handle, etc. Some may have even dripped onto the floor and gone ANYWHERE in the whole house. Some of them tried convincing me J could eat the white meat because the oil doesn't seep in past the skin; I thoughtfully reminded them that they sliced through the crispy, oily skin to cut the white meat....CROSS CONTAMINATION.
Upon first arriving we kept the twins outside to play; my hubby sat on a yard/lawn swing with them but swung a little too hard...the frame of the swing had the turkey thermometer on it...it hit the ground, and I picked it up - OOPS! Anyway, I rushed inside and scrubbed off the oil, and all was well. You have to wonder though, exactly how good is the service in the Children's Hospital ER on Thanksgiving Day?
They made the traditional stuff: Turkey(Peanut Oil), Shoepeg Corn(Topped with nuts), Sweet Potato casserole(Topped with nuts), Green Beans, Mashed Potatoes, Rolls....maybe some other stuff. All I had was some Milo's sweet tea, but the hubby and kids ate well. We sat J down at a Spongebob table with his only female cousin S (3 months younger than T & J). They sat and talked; J even offered her a "geen bean" which she kindly took, ate, and replaced with one from her plate. It was really sweet. T sat in my lap at the other kids' table eating green beans and a roll; the other two cousins L (almost 4 yo) and C (8 yo) and my hubby. It is odd that all of the cousins so far...all 5 of the kids love green beans. After J finished his dinner, we sat T down with S where they got along well; scary, but true, T stole turkey off of her cousins' plate....luckily J wasn't touched by the evil turkey.
Later that night, at home, I changed T's diaper and overalls; this very tan, turdish object came out of her overalls and landed by my pillow. Thank goodness it was just the roll turned into a super-compressed "burb ball", and yes I did have to sniff it to determine what it was. - Photo Below November 28 Random acts of toddlerness...or boredomLately the activity level of the twins has tripled. Here is an abbreviated list of the "not-so-pleasant" surprises the twins have greeted me with lately:
There are other things that happened, but I'm getting sleepy. I'll write more about the good and bad of toddlerhood as soon as I can. I haven't even spoke of Thanksgiving yet, but photos are in the album below.
*MSN Spaces likes to change the order of my uploaded photos, so they might not be in the order they were written about. November 25 State of disciplineSince we began time-out (again) the twins have stopped hitting themselves; also, they have really been good to each other (compared). J had not bitten T since Sunday until he bit her arm one time this afternoon. He has wanted too bite, but he stops himself - I am so proud of my little man! T, on the other hand, has bitten me a few times out of frustration at the Health Department....she is impatient when it comes to the slow folks at WIC.
I have actually put the kids in time-out more for hair-pulling and hitting than biting. Overall, I feel like we are making great progress in teaching/learning right from wrong. After J leaves time-out he always gives his sister a kiss; soon we will teach him to say "sorry" too. Toddlers...gotta love 'emTo begin, I would like to say know my kids are quite "active"...some people tell me their kids never got into anything. Mine get into anything and everything.
The twins have pushed their beds around since the week after we got them; J began crawling under his bed last week. Then the day before Thanksgiving I walked in to find them blocking the door with a crib mattress; I pushed it away (with T sitting on top) to survey the rest of the damage. J was "bottomless" climbing all over the wooden bed frame; I was simply thankful his diaper hadn't had poop in it this time. It is hard not to laugh at scenes like that. Photo is below.
I'm sure you've read the previous posts involving the battle of toddlers vs. electronics. A reminder picture of a flipped over boom box and VCR is below. I have been searching for a good answer to the question "Where the heck can I put the TV, VCR, DVD player, and boom box, that they can't destroy it?" I finally took some old milk crates from college and stuffed them in the corner of the nursery between the two dressers. I put the TV on top, and the other devices on top of that; I wedged them well enough in the corner to buy myself a week or two (I hope). Photo is below.
Oh yeah, the DVD player still works; I put it in the corner stack tonight. The Lion King plays until the menu screen, maybe after that too...I ejected it for The Wubbulous World of Dr. Suess. November 20 More catching upWow, so that last post was written yesterday, and already things have changed. As far as discipline we have gone back to "time-out"; however, I am holding the offender in a sitting position in the corner for ultimate control. T has only had to be put in time-out once in 24 hours; J, on the other hand, has landed in that corner at least 10 times. It seems to be working; I talk to him about what he did wrong while I hold him in the corner. He will actually look me in the eye and listen to what I say now; before, with spanking (what I swore I'd never do, and now swear I'll never do again) he would shrug off the physical discomfort, turn his head and ignore me when I spoke. Not to mention he started hitting himself in the head after we started spanking. Today J has bitten T four times and me once; compared to Friday and Saturday that is NOT bad.
Um...lets see...J got on top of his dresser today. I found him standing on he dresser, the VCR was dangling in front of the dresser by it's power cord, and the boom box teetered on the dresser's edge with T lightly tugging the antenna; thank God the DVD player was still in my room recovering from surgery. The Rugrats movie (VHS of course) is a lost cause...I refuse to splice video tape together for something like that. The ENTIRE box (20oz) of Cheerios had been emptied, and the twins ate a whole box of raisins (Poopsville, USA). On the lighter side, no one was injured; however, J was running out of things to destroy, and he could have easily flipped his TV off the dresser on to his sister(now I feel lucky).
J has been very good about labeling 6 colors (red, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink), and now we will work harder on orange, brown, black, white, and gray.
T has been focusing much of her attention to numbers; she now says "one, two, fee" all the time. She is starting to get her fingers working with the words too.
*Sidenote: My brother is hearing impared and uses sign language. In sign language the number 3 is represented by your first two fingers and thumb instead of your first 3 fingers(that would be a "W"). When first counting to the babies as infants, I used the "deaf 3" instead of the mainstream 3; after many months, I converted back to the normal 3 so that they would know what family means when they hold up their first 3 fingers. Now that T is trying to count on her fingers, she is using the "deaf 3"- that is so cool. Partial catching upAnother massive gap in posting...sorry. The twins have been very demanding; I've never heard so much crying. T seems to cry everytime J makes loud sounds, and since he has been biting her so much, she is a little scared of him getting too close. The biting issue has gotten ridiculous; T tried biting back a few times but had little success. I can't even count the number of bites T has; they are all on her back, shoulders, and arms. I have been experimenting with different forms of discipline for the twins when they bite; T responds to any discipline, while J seems to not really care.
We had to baby-proof the dresser we put in the nursery; the way it is built, standard drawer latches do not work. My creative hubby developed a plan that has yet to be defeated(11 days and counting) - holes and ropes. Picture is below.
I remember the old days when parents had to disassemble the VCR because a toddler filled it with oatmeal and pony-tail holders. This morning I put the Lion King in the kids' DVD player and started the film; I came back a few minutes later to find the TV blank screened, looking at me like "What DVD?" I hit the open button, but the tray was empty. I scrambled around the room searching hard for that DVD (Disney is so expensive!); I questioned J and T - nothing. I went back to the DVD player to close it and the tray got hung halfway in. Crap! I took the case off and got the DVD out before my man got out of bed(I didn't want to bother him with that crap). The DVD has one short DEEP scratch that probably makes it unplayable; the player may or may not work...I haven't plugged it back in. Instead I have punished the children with VHS (I guess I'm only hurting myself with all of that stressful rewinding). By the way...why do kids like the Wizard of Oz so much? November 08 Recent incidents in Baby-landWell, the kids have been working hard on destroying their room.
Their long dresser now contains air...no clothes. J spent several days last week making the clean clothes in the dresser dirty clothes on the floor. One morning he even vomited in one of the empty drawers and the pile of clothes next to it.
Speaking of vomiting...J seems to enjoy vomiting milk. He gags himself with four fingers till he pukes. Is my baby a future bulimic?
Those handy round doorknob covers proved to be little use recently; J managed to take it off and open his door. Thankfully, I caught him in the act and stopped the escape...until next time
The twins (mainly T) have been working hard for over a week to break their window. After they went to bed last Friday, I snuck into the nursery and covered the bottom pane of glass with clear contact paper. My mom came up with that idea...brilliant! So far, so good. At least if the glass breaks, the pieces should stay stuck together.
At the hospital last week, I expressed concern about J eating paint from his window pane; actually, my concern is that this house was built in 1955. They drew blood for a lead level, but we haven't received results yet.
Oh yeah, I can't forget to mention the biting problem. J has been leaving major marks on T; he likes to bite her back and shoulders (he even bit her tummy - ouch!) T has only bitten him once for the last 10 times he has bitten her. I don't know how to solve this problem. Time-out is pointless for maniacs; I can't keep them in a corner for long. I've even tried popping J's bottom, but he laughs at me and seems to enjoy it. I have been putting a jacket or fleece on T when she is awake and alone with her brother. I can't just slather my daughter down in Tabasco...ideas anyone?
Below are pictures of the door knob, the kids passed out on the floor last Saturday(they got their way - I was fed up and didn't fight back), and the window covered in contact paper. November 07 Ouch...you didn't even cry?Though the twins love each other, they often get sick of each other's company. Mainly T gets fed up with J's biting; since they share a room it is hard to keep them apart for long. I had this not-so-brilliant idea to try the playpen again in the nursery as an escape for T; as soon as I opened it up she tried climbing in to hide. I put her in the playpen and put the top on the playpen as well; after all, J knows how to get the top off from the inside not the outside.
I left the room until I heard the thud I had been anticipating. J didn't even try to take the top off - he flipped the pen over with T inside, and he crawled in the top between the velcro tabs. The twins quickly turned the tipped over hexagonal pen into a toy...rolling around the room and hitting their heads on what little furniture they have.
Even after taking the playpen away (boy they were mad about that!) J managed to hit his head leaving a nasty swollen pocket of purple...but he NEVER cried! The must have really worn themselves out in that playpen. Aside from being totally sweaty, they fell asleep between 5 and 6 (2-3 hours early); they slept till 6:48 this morning too - IT IS A MIRACLE! November 02 Halloween is over :(Halloween was a blast; the temperature ended up being 67 degrees. We took the kids trick-or-treating to our next-door, and across-the-street neighbors' houses. They got tons of candy due to the lack of trick-or-treaters in our area. Fortunately for my hubby, the kids don't eat candy...he got, like 6 or 8 packs of M&M's.
We also went to my father-in-law's house for their annual Halloween block party and bonfire. The kids' costumes worked out great until T ran through a few strands of freshly roasted marshmallow; her tail got quite stuck together, and eventually it got stuck to her shoes. J hung out with my FIL's next door neighbor; she is about 10 years old and takes great care of him. J also ran around chasing the big boys on the block; T ran around chasing the air...and loving it. The kids got to see two of their three cousins, and we found out that the missing cousin is expecting a little brother or sister in April or May.
The kids managed to keep their costumes on for over two hours; they even kept their hoods up most of the time. It was great to see them having so much fun! It was also fun standing back and watching my hubby chase T everywhere; I guess he found out why I am always worn out. My FIL chased J around for a while, and he even got to walk trying to hold both babies' hands.
I wish my stirrups had worked out a little better; they slid up the kids' legs after about an hour. J's horse costume also popped two snaps as he filled up his diaper. T's costume was perfect; her unicorn horn was perky all night.
Overall, everything was great; we can't wait to do it all again next year
Photos are below in the Halloween album (Ladybug and Skeleton guy are cousins) October 15 I really need to do this more often.I keep getting pre-occupied and not updating this blog.
Things have been changing in baby land. J began getting out of the playpen and crib again; rather than have him try to escape while he is sleepy and get hurt, I got him a toddler bed(2 weeks ago today). I stayed with him for 4.5 hours that first night; it quickly became clear that T was jealous of the bed.
The second night was a breeze, except for T climbing out of the crib. Day 3 she got out of the playpen. My mom-in-law bought T a matching toddler bed, and we childproofed the nursery. Since then I have childproofed more everyday as they learn more and do worse things.
The second night both kids were in beds I left them alone to do figure it out. I came back a few minutes later, and they had both gone to the right bed and passed out!!! That rocked!
In the time since then numerous fingers have been shut in toy boxes and doors. A bite of paint is missing off of a window(house built in 1955-not good). A peg is missing from the bookshelf; I haven't seen that peg digested in any diapers, but I did find the paint in J's diaper. Carpet has been unwound, and phone cords have been clipped.
J went to the doctor for a cold. He was fully clothed and 28lbs 9oz...whoa! He is 33" tall. They drew blood from his finger, and for the third time straight, he didn't cry one bit.
The diaper rash has been rough; J only wants to eat carrots, raisins, and grapefruit - ouch! Desitin 40% does little good when a butt is bleeding.
Oh, and I learned the hard way - if your son gets an ouchy on his "wee-wee" do NOT use Neosporin w/ pain relief..just use A&D Ointment to ease the pain. |
